Membership of Eden Mencap Society

Eden Mencap Society encourages our local and wider community to join our society to show support for our aims and objectives.  We are always looking for people who share our values and who want to make a difference, becoming a member is one way of doing just that.  If you believe in what we are doing then by becoming a member you can stay in touch with the latest developments via our member’s page and mailings when we have some important information to share.

Membership of Eden Mencap Society is guided by the Memorandums and Articles and these are available for every member to consider, they can be emailed to you or you can view them at our office.

The board of Trustees has produced a membership pack and invite you to become a member of Eden Mencap Society.

Membership of the society shall be open to all people (whether with or without a learning disability) who declare their support for, and are in sympathy with, the objects stated in the Memorandum.

Membership shall be granted to those individuals/groups/families that submit the application form and pay annual subscription and are accepted by the Board of Trustees.

Being a member of Eden Mencap Society carries duties and responsibilities.

  • You will be invited to attend our Annual General Meeting (AGM)
  • EMS members (over the age of 18) are required to vote on the appointment of the Board of Trustees & Patrons at the AGM.
  • You can apply for a position on the Board of Trustees.
  • You can have a say on what we do and how we do it.
  • You can volunteer your time to support our services; you will be able to access training and be provided with at DBS certificate.

Standard Membership

To become a Member, you need to send £1 and subject to approval by our Board, you will then receive a Share Certificate.  As a Member of Eden Mencap Society your share won’t increase in value and if you decide to leave you get your £1 back after the end of the financial year (March) on return of your certificate.  The £1 will be held as a society asset for the purpose of the society’s debts and liabilities in the event of EMS being wound up.

EMS will keep in touch with their members via email and members area information displayed in the front window of our office on Little Dockray and our website.

To begin the process of becoming a member and supporter of Eden Mencap Society please complete the enclosed form and return it to EMS with your £1.00 coin or cheque (made payable to Eden Mencap).

Your membership will be considered at our next Board meeting and if successful we will send you your welcome letter


Additional Supportive Annual Membership

As a charity, EMS receives funds and donations from a variety of sources for use in supporting our membership; in the past these have included trips out, holidays, theatre visits, training, membership gifts, discount cards etc. As a member we would encourage you to suggest things we could do to improve our membership benefits.  We also apply for grants to enable us to offer experiences to our members, to help us in this we have set an Additional Support Annual Membership scheme, which we invite you to take up.

The additional income that is received from this source will help us to provide more opportunities for our membership and also to attract matched funding.

Benefits in taking the additional supportive annual membership include:

  • Free entry to members New Year’s Party and special  rates for up to 3 guests
  • Caravan holiday at competitive rates at Amy’s caravan at Silloth
  • Using Café Inspire from 1pm daily Mon-Fri
  • A free initial meeting with Eden Benefits Advice Service
  • A free place on our summer outing
  • Get involved in sports through get active and football for a small contribution
  • Invites to special events such as theatre trips, evenings out, activity holidays
  • A twice a year newsletter showing what we have been up to

The membership year will run from 1st October to the 30th September, subscriptions due at the AGM.

Our day opportunities services will take over the running of the events and membership as part of their programme and present to the members at the AGM the events, fundraising and income that they have organised for the membership.

The cost for the Additional Supportive Annual Membership is:

Individual Membership: £5

Family Membership (1-2 adults and up to 3 children): £15

Group Membership (other community groups/supporters): £25

Corporate Membership (business community): £50

(These rates are an annual additional to the initial £1 subscription)

If you would like to take additional supportive membership then please add this to your £1.00 membership fee.

A member must pay their additional annual subscription promptly, if payment is not received after 6 months of the subscription becoming due then the member will be removed from the membership list.

Additional donations can be made to the membership group, please discuss this with the Chief Officer.

Group and corporate member’s contributions enable lots of the above to happen as well as funding we receive from local groups such as Penrith Rotary, Lord Hothfield’s bridge fund, The Pot Place fundraising, Penrith Lions and various small donations received from members of the community who wish to remain anonymous. We are keen to promote the support that groups and corporate members give to us. We often arrange for a photo opportunity with The Herald (our local newspaper) and via our website and facebook & twitter social media sites.
